This is purely hypothetical and not for sale. I do not take ownership of any and all images used for the entirety of the project.

The project stemmed from a post I encountered on the ’gram. It was a few slides of LeBron’s biggest career milestones and the world’s most popular cultural trends at the time. It’s his 20th season and it was the same year he’s expected to break the NBA’s all-time regular season scoring record—he did—so I wanted to do something to celebrate history and my favorite athlete.

Personal works still go through my development process starting with a creative brief and a good strategy to establish direction and centralize explorations. It was an open opportunity to dip my toes into the editorial design sphere, so I studied numerous book layouts and went on the look for an appropriate typographical route to take.

The intention was to highlight the vision of a “retrospective” or a “look back” which inspired the lean towards newspaper typography and old-fashioned texturing. The identity had to show dominance, longevity, and consistency—propelling the use of superimpositions, extended and condensed typefaces, as well as a strict grid system—fundamentally encapsulating LeBron as a player and the career he’s had, thus far.

The title cover, “20 Years a King”, alludes to his on-court alias, “The King”, using a typographical play that stretches the numbers “23” and “6”. These are the two numbers LeBron James has interchangeably worn in his career. Each digit mimics a basketball ring paying homage to the three teams he has played for—the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Visuals from colors and layout appeal were equally motivated by modern sports media, Nike’s future-forward graphics, and The LeBron Brand’s distinctiveness which were all important to properly communicate to the audience, namely, his basketball fandom.

Twenty posters of historical career headlines; a 70-page hardwood classic journey; a spotlight on Nike’s LeBron James shoe line; and a recall of worldwide yearly phenomena. The entire endeavor culminated in a unique amalgamation of a sports editorial featurette highlighting one of the greatest players, if not the greatest, to ever touch a basketball.
